Basic Dental Health Vocabularies
There are terms that are quite unfamiliar as they are just mentioned in a dental clinic by your dentist. They might seem to be a foreign language but they would enlighten you to keep track of dental problems and solutions as well. Here’s a quick translation of common dental terms.
1. Cavity: A hole in the tooth or, more technically, an area where the tooth enamel (covering) has been destroyed.
2. Plaque: A sticky film of bacteria growing on the teeth. The bacteria release acids that attack tooth enamel, breaking it down and eventually causing cavities.
3. Tartar: Plaque that has hardened on or between the teeth. It must be removed by a professional.
4. Gingivitis: The early stages of periodontal (gum) disease; an infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth.
5. Root canal: Inside every tooth is the pulp, which provides the tooth with nutrients. If the pulp becomes infected, a root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans the remaining pulp and seals the tooth to prevent future problems.
6. Crown: A covering for the tooth. It can be used to hide a discolored tooth, support a weak tooth or restore a tooth’s original shape.
